Hamburg, Germany, Große Freiheit 36 - 3.6.1986.  (Thanks Mick & ebay)

The source for this 2nd version of the Hamburg gig is a bootleg picture disc LP called "More Bermuda than Pizza" which is actually a mis-press of a Velvet Underground LP.

I bought the LP, expecting it to contain an edited performance of PiL live in Austria at the annual Donauinselfest from September '86. I was a little surprised therefore to find that the LP actually contains the first 9 songs from the Hamburg gig three months previously.

The first thing that you will notice upon listening to it that it is completely obvious that the band are playing inside a club and not at an open air festival. There's an echo that can only be produced by playing within four enclosed walls, and the crowd is obviously small. (Große Freiheit 36 only has a capacity of up to 1200!)

The second thing that you will notice (if you own the Hamburg bootleg!) is that the comments are identical on both, including John shouting at the gobbers and his reactions to being thrown flowers.

The third point is that on the complete Hamburg bootleg the band finish the set successfully and at no point does John McGeoch get twatted by a bottle, proving that neither versions are from the Austrian gig.

The only thing that I can say in favour of this bootleg is that not only is Kashmir complete, but we also get the intro before the song, whereas on the complete Hamburg bootleg the recording begins in the middle of Kashmir. This though is a very small compensation...

If it wasn't for the fact that the 2nd version is from an entirely different source (although poorer quality!) it would be a complete waste of time and effort.

The LP sells on ebay (occasionally) for between £20 - £50.
